Studies on the characteristics and origin of the Earth's magnetic field have been developing dramatically. In particular, recent progress of studies on generation mechanisms of the geomagnetic field through dynamo simulations and physical properties of core material is remarkable. Advances in rock magnetism and paleomagnetism have increased information on the geomagnetic field in the past. These developments have enabled us to combine observational and theoretical results. They also have enabled us to discuss a possible relation between the geomagnetic field, the Earth's orbital elements and paleoclimate. Now the geomagnetism is not an isolated research field, but one of multidisciplinary research fields.

In this viewpoint, we hold this international session in the Japan Geoscience Union Meeting 2006. This session is also to commemorate retirement of Professor Masaru Kono. We hope that researchers studying the Earth and planetary magnetic field meet together in a room, present their recent results, and encourage interdisciplinary works through vigorous discussion at this opportunity. We are going to invite several very active researchers from abroad.

In this session, we welcome presentation submissions on the topics below.

(A) Geodynamo: Theory, Numerical simulations, Laboratory Experiments, and associated studies on the core and the deep interior of the Earth

Solicited speakers
P. Roberts (UCLA)
J. Wicht (Max-Planck Inst)
P. Cardin (Univ Joseph Fourier)
E. Ohtani (Tohoku Univ)
S. Tanaka (IFREE, JAMSTEC)

(B) Paleomagnetism: Studies on the main geomagnetic field of the Earth and planets as paleointensity, secular variations, reversals, excursions, and rock magnetism as a basis for paleomagnetism. Interdisciplinary researches, for example relation with Earth's environments, are encouraged.

Solicited speakers
R. Coe (UCSC)
A. Jackson (ETH)
A. Roberts (Univ Southampton)
M. Kono (Tokyo Tech / Okayama Univ)
S. Maruyama (Tokyo Tech)

  • All presentations in English.
  • We'll hold oral and poster sessions.
